Australian airline Qantas is set to replace 1,300 Blackberry mobile phones with Apple iPhones in a move that will save “millions” for the aircraft carrier.
Australian airline Qantas is set to replace 1,300 Blackberry mobile phones with Apple iPhones in a move that will save “millions” for the aircraft carrier.
A staff survey found the majority of Qantas employees had a preference for the Apple smartphone over Research in Motion (RIM)’s struggling Blackberry handsets.
The ease-of-use and security features of Apple’s iOS operating system are attractive to the Qantas staff, according to the company.
“The iPhone offers a user-friendly interface and simple access to emails, contacts and calendars, as well as meeting all Qantas’ security requirements,” a Qantas spokesman told Fairfax Media.
The change will also provide savings for the Australian airline via mobile carrier agreements and streamlined support infrastructure.
“Transition from the BlackBerry to the iPhone is part of Qantas’ broader mobility strategy and, once complete, will result in significant cost savings,” the spokesman said.
Last week Qantas confirmed a move to another Apple iOS device, with pilots having access to operational information digitally, replacing paper charts, flight plans and manuals on iPads during flights. The move will save Qantas approximately 15,000 pages a day of printed documents.
